3 Days Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Safari – Volcanoes National Park

Experience the magic of meeting mountain gorillas in their natural habitat at Volcanoes National Park.

Itinerary

Day 1: The Heart of Rwanda & The Volcanoes
Morning: Arrival at Kigali International Airport. Meet your guide and begin with a Kigali City Tour, including the moving Kigali Genocide Memorial and the vibrant Kimironko Market.

Afternoon: A scenic 2.5-hour drive to Musanze, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park. You’ll wind through lush, terraced hillsides.

Evening: Check into your lodge. Enjoy a briefing from your guide over dinner about the trekking etiquette for the following day.

Day 2: The Main Event – Gorilla Trekking
06:30 AM: Early breakfast and transfer to the Kinigi Park Headquarters.

The Trek: You’ll be assigned to one of the 12 habituated gorilla families. Depending on the gorillas' movement, the hike can last anywhere from 1 to 5 hours.

The Encounter: Once found, you have exactly one hour to observe, photograph, and sit in the presence of these gentle giants.

Afternoon: Return to the lodge for a late lunch and "boot cleaning" service (standard at most lodges).

Day 3: Musanze Photography & The Drive to Kigali
Morning: The Musanze "Volcano Shot"
The View: Before leaving Musanze, stop at the open fields or the main road near the Musanze Police Station. This is the classic spot where the Mt. Bisoke and Mt. Karisimbi volcanoes loom directly over the town.

The Vibe: Capture the morning bustle of Musanze—bikers with yellow vests, women in colorful kitenge fabrics, and the mountain mist lifting off the peaks.

Mid-Morning: The Scenic "Thousand Hills" Drive
The drive from Musanze to Kigali (approx. 2.5 hours) is one long photo opportunity.

Gakenke District: This is the most photogenic part of the drive. The road snakes through deep valleys with steep, terraced tea and coffee plantations.

The "Stop & Snap": Ask your driver to pull over at one of the safe mountain overlooks. You’ll get that infinite "layers of green hills" shot that Rwanda is famous for.

Lunch: Nyirangarama (Sina Gerard)
A legendary roadside stop halfway to Kigali.

Photography: It’s a great place for candid "street style" shots of the local marketplace and the famous Agashya juice displays.

Snack: Grab some local brochettes or the famous Rwandan meat pies.

Afternoon: Kigali Arrival & Transfer
Kigali Heights/Convention Centre: Once back in the capital, the Kigali Convention Centre (the glowing dome) is the city's most iconic architectural shot.

Transfer: Head to Kigali International Airport (KGL) for your evening departure.
